After making his first kaleidoscope quilt many years ago, Ricky decided there had to be an easier way to create this beautiful, difficult looking quilt. Using prepared strata from sparkling jewel- toned fabrics, he will show you the way to creating an individualistic kaleidoscope quilt. The exciting result will look complicated but the simple construction and dynamic visual impact will appeal to both confident beginners and advanced quilters.

This technique is without using paper to stitch through. So no time consuming pull out of the little bits of paper. With a special trick we will start on the back of the fabric. You can leave the raw edges showing or couch with a decorative thread. Couching can be done as a quilting element + additional quilting.

Couching is a way to outline a design with a decorative thread. Or just as a thick line drawing. Or you can make your own fabric by couching lots of threads. It can also be done as a quilting element. This technique can start on the back as well as on the front of the fabric or quilt. With or without using paper to stitch through.

08 SCHULTZ-HERZBERGER, Gabriele (Germany)
Playing with Fibonacci

Final quilt example - Click for detail...

E-mail: schultz-herzberger@t-online.de
Web: www.gabi-s-h.de

Leonardo Fibonacci was an Italian mathematician, considered to be the most talented western mathematician of the Middle Ages. The Fibonacci numbers are a sequence of numbers named after him. They start with 0 and 1, and each Fibonacci number equals the sum of the two preceding Fibonacci numbers. In nature, they occur as spirals in flower heads and the shells of snails, the most famous being the nautilus shell. We will be playing with 8 different fabrics cut according to the Fibonacci series. They are sewn together, cut again after Fibonacci and rearranged. This little game of cutting and twisting can be repeated several times. The result will always be regarded as balanced and aesthetically appealing.

09 EINMO, Kimberly (USA)
Faux Cathedral Windows

E-mail: kimberly@kimberlyeinmo.com
Web: www.kimberlyeinmo.com

Tons of fun and oh-sew-easy to do, this fabulous quilt can be made using a charm pack (choose any group of coordinating fabrics with at least 40 – 5” squares) and some contrasting fabric for the arcs. You’ll use fusible web and simple machine appliqué to create the look of a traditional cathedral windows-style block, but this pattern lets you showcase a scrappy group of fabrics in a modern, uncommonly used setting. Low-key and relaxing, this class is perfect for playing with the placement of your fabrics while perfecting your basic machine appliqué stitches. If your machine has a zig zag stitch, you can make this quilt!

10 EINMO, Kimberly (USA)
Chain Saw

E-mail: kimberly@kimberlyeinmo.com
Web: www.kimberlyeinmo.com

This stunning quilt looks incredibly complex, but is really quite easy and so much fun to piece. It requires just one Layer Cake (40 – 10” squares) and one Jelly Roll (40 – 2½” strips) plus 2¾ yds. background fabric to make the entire quilt; but for this class, you’ll only need enough fabric to learn the technique and make one block. (Kimberly will provide alternate fabric amounts if you want to use fabrics from your stash.) If you enjoy fun surprises when you rotary cut, you’ll love this design. No matter what fabrics you begin with, the finished blocks will look oh-so-different than what you would expect. Kimberly will share dozens of helpful hints and tricks with you to make these blocks of many seams stitch together with absolute ease. The finished quilt will certainly dazzle your family and friends and the fabrics will dance delightfully with motion and excitement!
